About the Ridley Motorcycle Company

The Ridley Motorcycle Company was a manufacturer based on Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It was founded in 1995 and ceased operations in 2010. The company’s assets were acquired by 2 Wheel Ventures’ Ridley Genuine Parts (RGP). Ridley motorcycle models included the following: Speedster, Auto-Glide Classic, Auto-Glide Chopper, Auto-Glide Old School, Auto-Glide Sport, Auto-Glide Trike, Auto-Glide TT, and X88.

Understanding the Lemon Law

The Song-Beverly Act, or the lemon law, protects consumers who have unknowingly purchased defective products. Under the lemon law, consumers could file claims against the manufacturer if their vehicles (including motorcycles) are defective. To qualify as a lemon, vehicles must meet the following three requirements:

  • The vehicle must still be under an active manufacturer warranty
  • The vehicle must have a defect that affects use, safety, or value
  • The vehicle’s defect must persist even after a reasonable number of repair attempts

Can I File a Lemon Law Claim if the Manufacturer Shut Down?

This is a very important question. In general, filing a lemon law claim against a manufacturer that has shut down (or a defunct manufacturer) can be challenging. If a manufacturer went out of business, the manufacturer will no longer be able to provide replacements, repairs, or refunds. In cases where the manufacturer’s assets were acquired by another company, then the new company may be responsible for any claims that arise. However, if the manufacturer is completely dissolved (i.e., no other company purchased the company), then there may be no entity to sue under the lemon law.

If the motorcycle was sold with a warranty that is still active, you could have a claim if another company took over any warranty obligations when the original manufacturer shut down, although this is unlikely since the Ridley Motorcycle Company shut down so long ago.

If you purchased the motorcycle used or pre-owned by a dealership or other third party, then the dealership may be liable and could be sued.
